From Butter to Over 30 Gourmet Popcorn Flavors

Kernel’s Popcorn Express started popping corn back in 1986 in the original owner’s garage, producing popcorn and popcorn warmers for gas stations and convenience stores. The original owner worked and trained with other gourmet popcorn companies to grow Kernel’s flavors and the business.

In December 2009, Tracy and Sherry visited the small 2,000 square foot popcorn store at 224 N Kansas to purchase some popcorn for Christmas gifts. Sherry fell in love with the cinnamon popcorn and they discovered the company was looking for a new owner. After leaving they discussed the possibility of becoming popcorn makers. They made it official by purchasing and renaming the company on July 31st, 2010.

Meet the Popcorn Kernel of the Popcorn Express.

Tracy, whose background is in engineering and finance, came up with the new name of the company, leading to Sherry’s design of the Popcorn Kernel who is the conductor of the Popcorn Express train. The theme is carried throughout the showroom of the store with train car displays and a beautiful painting of the Kernel running the Popcorn Express, which hangs in the new larger showroom they moved into in 2014.

Today, Kernel’s Popcorn Express warmers and popcorn are in convenience stores in 7 states with their classically delicious butter popcorn and offer dozens of gourmet flavors throughout the year.

Fun fact: The favorite flavor is definitely classic caramel during the holidays, with over 14,000 pounds sold during just the holiday season last year!
